Mariinsky II — New Stage

About the project
The New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre is another major cultural building in St Petersburg. Mariinsky II opened in 2013 and prompted extensive debate about its architecture. The original concept was revised, and the completed building follows a design by the Canadian practice Diamond Schmitt Architects. The restrained facade combines large-format windows with honed natural Jura Beige. Careful selection made it possible to cover the extensive stone elevations in a consistent colour, reinforcing the concise forms and minimalist character of the theatre complex.
